Industrial and technological development in Pakistan has been quite rapid since its independence and particularly recent growth in the industrial sector in Pakistan. The main fields of development have been related to the enhancement of agriculture, establishment and up-gradation of industries and exploration of the indigenous resources. This development has resulted in an increased demand for qualified engineers in different fields in addition to other professionals. In order to meet this demand and to provide an opportunity of engineering education to the masses, the federal, as well as provincial Governments, are trying their best to setup facilities for providing quality technical education. So, there is a dire need of best electrical engineering universites in Pakistan to produce competent Electrical Engineers.

In order to promote Engineering education in Pakistan, the Government of Pakistan has established a number of engineering universities and technical colleges throughout the country.

After completing intermediate/ A-levels, candidates have to make a hard decision of choosing the best engineering university. Choice of an engineering school depends upon a number of factors considering the quality of education, infrastructure, accreditation with PEC (Pakistan Engineering Council), lab facilities, faculty strength and qualification, international collaborations, geographic location, research output, employer reputation and of course prestige.

To save future electrical engineers for the predicament of choosing the best electrical engineering university in Pakistan, we have compiled a list of best electrical engineering institutes in Pakistan. We have considered the factors mentioned above, the HEC (Higher Education Commission) and QS (Quaqurelli Symonds) World University Rankings while compiling this list. NUST was established in 1991 as a higher education institute with a focus on science and technology. It received the charter in 1993. Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI) of Engineering Sciences & Technology, KPK

The Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI) is one of the most prestigious engineering institutes of Pakistan. GIKI is known the world over for setting a standard of excellence in the field of engineering. Over the years, the institute has produced bright, innovative graduates employed at some of the most respectable firms all over the world. Institute of Space Technology (IST), Islamabad

The past century has been host to many technological advancements resulting in a gradual progression towards the betterment of society. Space science as such has been a vital force behind this advancement and has revolutionalized the process.

In this backdrop, it was decided in the year 2002 to establish an educational institution that would impart specialized education in space and related science to bring our nation at par with the international community. Thus, the Institute of Space Technology came into existence in September 2002 offering undergraduate degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Communication Systems Engineering as its core disciplines.

Starting from fall 2011, the institute launched an additional undergraduate program in the field of Electrical Engineering. Apart from these indigenous programs, the institute is collaborating with Beihang University (BUAA), Northern Polytechnic University (NPU), China and University of Surrey (UniS), UK to offer linked master’s programs in more than dozen areas.  The undergraduate programs offered by IST are approved by Higher Education Commission and accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council.

With HEC’s foreign faculty program, IST has a significant number of specialized teaching staff who have brought home with them years of experience from abroad.

The state-of-the-art training facilities enable the students to acquire hands-on experience, an acute requirement in the professional world. University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore

The University of Engineering and Technology located in the northern part of Lahore on the historical “Grand Trunk Road (G.T. Road)”, near the magnificent Shalimar Gardens built during the great Mughal Empire.

The institution started its career in 1921 as the ‘Mughalpura Technical College’. Later it became the ‘Maclagan Engineering College’, a name given to it in 1923 when Sir Edwards Maclagan, the then Governor of the Punjab who laid the foundation stone of the main building, now called the Main Block, which still retains its majesty despite the wear and tear of over eight decades.

At that stage, the institution offered courses of study in only two disciplines; Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. In the year 1932, the institution was affiliated with the University of the Punjab for the award of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.  In 1947, at the time of independence, the Institution was offering well-established B.Sc. Degree Courses in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. In 1954 it started a Bachelor’s Degree course in Mining Engineering, the first-ever of its kind in the country. However, the real expansion and development of the institution commenced in 1962 on its transformation into the ‘West Pakistan University of Engineering & Technology’, and within a few years Bachelor’s Degree Courses were started in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum & Gas Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Architecture, and City & Regional Planning.

Later, the University started to develop its postgraduate programs, and by 1970’s it was offering Master’s Degree Courses in various specializations of engineering, architecture, planning and allied disciplines. Later, Ph.D. Degree Program was also instituted in a number of disciplines. Later on renamed University of Engineering & Technology in 1972.

Keeping in view the upcoming power crises situation in the country, in 2004 the University established its own Power Generation Unit with the capacity of 2 Mega Watts later enhanced to 3 Mega Watts and became first and only countrywide educational institution who has its own Power Generation Unit. To meet the growing demands for the Engineering graduates and allied disciplines in the country, the University started an expansion program in the new millennium. Consequently, the teaching and research capacity of the UET was enhanced and the establishment of the satellite campuses was taken up. At present, the University has three satellite campuses; the Faisalabad Campus, the Kala-Shah-Kaku Campus, and the Rachna College.

All the campuses of UET offer bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering. Electrical ENgineering degree can be acquired in specialized disciplines of Power, Electronics, Computer Systems and Telecommunicatoin Engineering. Lahore campus offers all of the four streams.

UET Lahore is one of the best electrical engineering university due to its qualified faculty, state-of-the-are facilities and solid infrastructure. Alumni of UET Lahore have been serving Pakistan since the independence and they will continue serving incessantly.

Mehran University of Engg. & Technology, Jamshoro, Sindh

MUET is the best electrical engineering university in the Sindh province. The number of students admitted to the First Year classes of all the disciplines under a regular scheme at Jamshoro is 1053 out of which 1000 candidates are admitted from Sindh Province, including Karachi Division, according to a precisely calculated ratio of population and other considerations. 34 applicants are admitted from other parts of Pakistan while 19 seats are reserved for the foreigners. Whereas under Self Finance Scheme and Special Scheme 548 and 86 candidates are admitted from Sindh province respectively.

The number of students admitted to the First Year classes of all four disciplines at Khairpur Mir’s Campus is 244 out of which 60 candidates are admitted under Self Finance Scheme. The detailed distribution of the seats is given in Prospectus. 

Most of the laboratories and workshops of the teaching departments are properly equipped and practical as well as didactic training is imparted to the students wherever applicable. Continuous efforts are ongoing to upgrade these facilities for the practical training and new equipment is acquired for this purpose. Additionally, training to the concerned staff is also organized within the University as well as outside. In some cases, where the training facilities are not available within the University, the students are sent to suitable institutes in Karachi or elsewhere to undergo adequate training. Every department has been provided an adequate number of personal computers and e-mail and Internet facilities for the training and use of the students as well as teaching staff.

Hostel facilities are also available for about 1000 students on the campus both male and female; which are located at walking distance from the teaching departments. These hostels are equipped with necessary facilities including bathrooms, reading rooms, game rooms, dining halls, etc. Other facilities available for the students include medical care, transport, games and recreation, Library and so on. 

University of Engineering. & Technology, Peshawar

University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Peshawar, is a premier institution of higher learning in the field of engineering sciences. Established as the university in 1980, today it boasts twenty two departments, covering an entire spectrum of engineering disciplines, from the traditional such as electrical and mechanical, to the cutting-edge technologies such as electronics, mechatronics and industrial engineering. To-date, more than eighteen thousand of our graduates are serving the needs of Pakistan, and many have achieved a high position of responsibility and excellence in their chosen fields. Besides bachelors degree courses, there is a robust post-graduate program, where scholars are engaged in rigorous training and research leading to Master’s and PhD degree

Over the last few years, with the Higher Education Commission’s support, UET has completed a number of research and infrastructure development projects, with a combined portfolio of Rs. 9 billion. Currently, UET Peshawar has five campuses at Mardan, Abbottabad, Bannu, Kohat and Jalozai offering quality engineering education to the people at their doorsteps.

UET Peshawar is continuously pushing towards its vision to achieve the highest level of engineering excellence and contribute to the socio-economic development of society with the knowledge and expertise of its graduates. A strong research base and academic programs are the focus of researchers and students from across the country, and UET Peshawar welcome diverse thoughts and new perspectives in engineering and technology fields. 

Peshawar Campus

With a modest beginning in 1952 as a “constituent” college of Peshawar University, UET, Peshawar was established in 1980 and is now one of the best electrical engineering institutes in the province of KPK. Located in this historic city, Peshawar Campus is a reflection of the surrounding environment. While the ambiance on campus is predominantly academic, there is a strong cultural flavor, easily discernable in every facet of its activities. Our unique cultural diversity is readily recognizable. There are many disciplines at Peshawar for students to choose from. These are supported by well-equipped laboratories, departmental research, central library, sports facilities and enough dormitory accommodation to house most students that need campus housing. 

Mardan Campus

As a result of our growth in the last few years, students were offered an option to get admission in other regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Mardan Campus was inaugurated in 2002, offering three engineering undergraduate programmes that include Telecommunication Engineering and Computer Software Engineering and recently Electrical Engineering. 

Abbottabad Campus

Abbottabad Campus was inaugurated in October, 2002, and is based in the old premises of Ayub Medical College. The city of Abbottabad gained fame as a city of schools and colleges. Establishment of a campus of UET, Peshawar in Abbottabad has not only addressed a longstanding public demand but also enhanced the city’s image as a seat of learning. 

Bannu Campus

Bannu Campus became operational in May 2002, in the premises of the comprehensive High School. This has brought higher education in engineering sciences to this neglected middle-southern region. Currently, two traditional disciplines in engineering sciences are offered, and efforts are afoot to consolidate these programs. Large investment is strengthing laboratories and upgrading infrastructure are being done to make this into a worldclass facility. 

Kohat Campus

The administrative and academic control of Engineering Programs of Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) was handed over to UET Peshawar on April 3, 2012. At present, UET Kohat Campus is offering B.Sc Electrical Engineering in leased premises. We are working with the provincial government to house this campus in its own premises. 

Jalozai Campus

The campus funded by HEC at the cost of Rs. 6,565,272 Million is being established on Pabbi Cherat Road at 11 KM Southwards from GT Road in district Nowshera. Total area of the campus is 402 acres and the total covered area is approximately 1,021,233 sq.ft. With living strength of 3240 students. At present, UET Jalozai Campus is offering B.Sc programmes in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. 

Comsats Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Islamabad

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering began its journey in September 2001 at CUI campuses of Islamabad, Abbottabad and Wah, and has made big strides in its brief span of existence. The peer-departments at CUI Lahore, Attock, which were established in 2002 and 2007 respectively, offer a congenial environment for studying various disciplines of Electrical Engineering. Our curriculum is unique in that it enables students to learn the techniques required to solve complex engineering problems and at the same time equips them with managerial and professional skills.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was initially established as the Computer Engineering Department at the Johar campus, Islamabad in the year 1999. Along with hiring faculty renowned for its expertise in research and application of technology, the institute established state-of-art laboratories equipped with latest and highly sophisticated equipment where students spend the time to innovate and engineer basics as well novel ideas to supplement the theoretical course work.

Initially, Microprocessor Lab, Electronics Lab and Computer Science Labs were established to meet the needs of our students. Later in 2002, the Very-Large-Scale-Integration (VLSI) Lab was also established to further enhance the working and learning opportunities for our students. With the availability of latest facilities along with the efforts of our competent faculty and staff, we were able to gain recognition from HEC within a year.

Following the accomplishments of Computer Engineering program, CU took a lead and became one of the premier institutions to launch Telecom Engineering program in the region. With the inclusion of Telecom Engineering program, the initially established Computer Engineering Department was transformed into the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Recently the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was shifted to the Permanent campus, Chak Shahzad, Islamabad, where the university has established nine new labs with latest cutting edge technology and equipment. These new labs are an added addition to our intellectual armament. Moreover, with a whole building block at our disposal, the university is now better able to design an environment particularly suited to technological learning. The cutting edge facilities and state of the art labs make Comsats one of the Best Electrical Engineering University in Pakistan.

University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila

The department started with a humble intake of 31 students but with the focus and effort to meet the growing demands of industry and emphasis on the quality of education and skill, Computer Engineering, as a result, was granted HEC’s recognition in August 2000 and PEC’s recognition in 2003. With the introduction of Telecom Engineering program, we were able to satisfy the demand of the robust Telecom industry in Pakistan. Our Telecom degree is also HEC and PEC recognized.

With the phenomenal increase in students’ enrollment in 1970’s, a plan to establish additional campuses of the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore was conceived. As a result of that, the University College of Engineering Taxila was established in 1975. For three years it functioned at Sahiwal. In 1978 it was shifted to its permanent location at Taxila. The College continued its working under the administrative control of the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore till October 1993. During this month it received its charter as an independent university under the University of Engineering and Technology Taxila Ordinance 1993. At present total enrollment of undergraduate and postgraduate students is above 2000.

UET Taxila boasts a research intensive and highly technical Electrical Power Engineering program. It offers full funding for Masters programs and thus is considered one of the Best Electrical Engineering University in upper areas of Punjab.

Administration

The Governor of Punjab is the Chancellor and the Education Minister of Punjab is the Pro-Chancellor of the University. The Syndicate is the governing/legislative body and the Academic Council is the highest academic body of the University. The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the University. He is assisted by Deans of Faculties, Chairmen of Departments, Directors and Principal Officers of the University – the Registrar, the Treasurer, the Controller of Examinations and the Project Director, to ensure that the provisions of the University Act, the Statutes and the Regulations are faithfully observed and implemented.

Location

The University campus is located on the outskirts of Taxila at a distance of 5 km from the city. It is situated near railway station Mohra Shah Wali Shah on Taxila-Havelian branch line. The city of Taxila is 35 km from the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on the main Rawalpindi-Peshawar highway. The University buses commute daily between the campus and the cities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Wah Cantt. The campus covers an area of 163 acres. All the teaching departments, a residential colony for teachers/ employees, student hostels, guesthouse, post office and bank are housed on campus.

NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi

The NED University of Engineering & Technology was established in March 1977 under an act of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh after upgrading of the former NED Government Engineering College, which was set up in 1921. The NED University is thus one of the oldest institutions in Pakistan for teaching and is the Best Electrical Engineering University in Sindh. Prior to this, the D.J.Sindh College, used to run classes to train subordinates for the Sindh P.W.D., the Municipalities and Local Boards.

The first-full time Principal of NED Engineering College was Mr. G.N.Gokhale who joined on 1st July 1923. Prior to this, Rai Sahib Bhupatrai had acted as Honorary Principal. The first professor (and Vice Principal) was Mr. S.B. Jannarkar who, along with Mr. Gokhale, did all the spadework in organizing and equipping the various departments and ordering the equipment for the Power House, Boiler Room, Hydraulics Laboratory, Engine Room and Machine Shops.

On the 1st of March, 1977 the NED Government Engineering College became the NED University of Engineering and Technology. From an enrolment of 50 students in 1923, the student population, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, has now gone up to nearly 7000. The faculty of Bio-Medical Engineering is located at NED LEJ Campus for which the land and building – estimated value Rs. 350 million – was donated by (Late) Latif Ebrahim Jamal, a well known philanthropist.

    i would advice newbies before choosing electrical engineering see the jobs in the market also keep in mind that you will had to do internship and have to be patient. Because in pakistan you will not get a job of your expectation. So better luck and work hard. 😀

    Air University Islamabad’s engineering merit and Fast university’s software and CS merit is more than 3 or 4 of them
    Like UET taxila, UET peshawar, MUET, COMSATS etc
    And getting admission in Air is tougher than IST, bcoz Air’s test is difficultier than IST so Air gives tough competition.
